How Peterbilt got started
A logging operation in Tacoma, Washington, needed trucks that would transport felled logs to nearby mills more quickly and efficiently. The company was founded in 1939 by Theodore Alfred Peterman. It took a little while for Peterman to decide whether he should build chain-driven trucks or more conventional logging models. He settled on a compromise and eventually purchased Fageol Motors in Oakland, California, for $50,000.
The company built two chain-driven trucks for logging purposes but soon realized that the model wasn’t very popular with customers. Eventually, the company changed its name to Peterbilt and began producing trucks that worked for both logging and hauling.
Changing hands several times over the years, the truck manufacturer still maintains its dedication to excellence and pride in the workmanship of each and every vehicle it produces. Today, the company focuses on four main goals that will help it remain an industry leader:
Enduring Craftsmanship
Forging the world’s finest heavy-duty trucks from the finest materials and assembling them with the highest-quality components is something Peterbilt prides itself on. This steadfast commitment has helped it grow into one of the largest truck makers in the world.
